    About Luminance Australia

Luminance Australia offer onsite and offsite luminance contrast LRV testing throughout Victoria, Australia.

Luminance contrast testing helps to ensure that your building complies with disabled access requirements for visually impaired people. A large proportion of people who are visually impaired are still able to distinguish variations in shade of colour. Sections 23 and 24 of the Disability Discrimination Act, seeks to ensure that people with a disability have equal access to premises, goods, services and facilities.

Luminance contrast is not just the difference in colour of surfaces or products.
Australian Standard AS1428.1-2009 states that luminance contrast is the light reflected from one surface, compared to the light reflected from another surface or product.

How do we measure luminance contrast?

A spectrophotometer is used to measure luminance contrast as specified in Australian Standard AS1428.1-2009. As per Australian Standard  AS1428.1-2009, a minimum luminance contrast of 30% is required depending on the surface or product being tested.
    Tactile ground surface indicators
    • Integrated tactiles minimum 30% luminance contrast
    • Discrete tactiles minimum 45% luminance contrast
    • Composite tactile minimum 60% luminance contrast.
    Stair nosing
    • Minimum 30% luminance contrast
    • Minimum 50mm and 75mm maximum stair nosing insert
    • 15mm maximum from the front edge of contrasting strip to front edge of step.
    Visual indicators on glazing
    • Minimum 75mm solid strip with minimum 30% luminance contrast when viewed against surrounding surfaces.
Doors, doorways and circulation space at doorways
    • Minimum 30% luminance contrast between the door, frame and wall
    • The minimum width off the areas of luminance contrast shall be 50mm.
    Toilet seat
    • Minimum 30% luminance contrast between the toilet seat, toilet pan, wall or floor against which it is viewed.
    Signage
    • Minimum 30% luminance contrast between letters/symbols and sign background colour
    • Minimum 30% luminance contrast between sign and background and wall colour on which it is fitted.
